Why Continue Your Education?
Are you considering enrolling or re-enrolling in school to improve your career prospects?  Perhaps you are interested in making a career change or learning new skills.  Well, you're not alone!  According to the Institute for Research on Adults in Higher Education, adult part-time students now out-number traditional younger students at colleges and universities throughout the United States.  No matter what the reason for continuing your education, taking courses to improve career or life skills is the best way to meet the challenges of our complex technological world.

Start with YOU! There are many reasons for returning to school.  Many adults return to school because they want to change their lives or because an event has already changed their lives.  These changes may be due to:  children starting school or leaving home, moving to a new location, marriage, company mergers, layoffs, or new technology.  Whatever your reasons for considering a return to school, discuss your plans with those who will be affected by your decision.  Consider these questions:

Do you have the support of your family?

Will further education improve your chances for promotion?

Can you balance family, work, school and other responsibilities?

Is there flexibility in your schedule or can you take classes only when your schedule permits?

Will your employer provide tuition assistance?

Can you devote the time and energy needed to complete the program?

While only you can answer many of these questions, college admissions counselors, career counselors and the experts in the NHHEAF Network Resource Center can offer you information, guidance and advice to help you understand and evaluate your options.  When evaluating different careers, remember that there is no better source of realistic, factual career information than people who are working in your field of interest.  Call different companies to arrange for "informational interviews" so that you may gain more information about particular careers and the opportunities that are available in various fields.  Here are some sample questions for the interview:

How did you break into this career?

What training is required to do your job?

What is the biggest challenge of your job?

What is the greatest reward of your job?

What advice would you give a person entering this field?

Returning to school gives you the opportunity to develop your talents and discover new interests.  Enjoy the experience!
